It would be a lie if somebody told you that point and click games can’t be fun, beautiful engaging and captivating. And this is exactly what Mutropolis is. It’s witty, interesting, has adorable and gorgeous artstyle that I am completely in love with and it mixes archeology with Sci-fi. That’s pretty bold for any indie developer if you ask me. The team behind it is Pirita Studio, an army of two and they were nice enough to do a little interview with us. You can read all about them, their lovely game and a lot more below.
Q: What was the inspiration behind your game?
Well, many things have influence Mutropolis: games, films… even google’s doodles.
Lucas Arts has a mayor influence, of course. Guybrush Threepwood and Many Calavera have a special place in our hearts. However, the big reference has been the Indiana Jones saga (the games and the movies). Indiana Jones has a big presence in the game.
Mutropolis is set in the future. In that world, Indiana Jones is some kind of legend between the archaeological community. Everybody thinks he was a real archaeologist, not a fictional character. And the main character of Mutropolis is kind of obsessed with him. He is like a nerdy & stubborn Indiana Jones.
We wanted to play with two concepts, the old dusty old fashioned archeology theme VS the futuristic set up.
The game has a lot of sobrenatural context and influence of ancient history culture. There is a rational part, with archaeological puzzles; and a magical part, with old gods and magical powers.
Also, there is a lot of little weird influences in the core of the game in a very subtle way. Like a lot of cthulhu references, some brotherhood with the sense of humor of the movie “Airplane!”, art inspiration frome some doodles of google, etc…
Q: Tell us a little bit about your team/studio.
We are Beatriz and Pablo, two indie developers based in Madrid, Spain.
The both of us have artistic formation, so making a game has been a real challenge in the technical area. But we really wanted to do something by ourselves. So, we started to investigate some engines. Finaly, we chosen Visionaire Studio and started to develop Mutropolis.
Q: How long has the game been in development?
We begun to think about make Mutropolis and put some ideas together at some point of 2015 in our spare time.
In 2016 started to work half a day in the game, and full time from the beginning of 2018.
So, 3 years + 1 extra year at the beginning of learning the engine, figure it out the indie develoment process, making a demo and everything else.
Q: According to you what is the most interesting thing about the game?
We really love the script and the characters. We have invested so many hours defining the world and the story. We have put a lot of love in every dialog, in every puzzle.
Our goal is make the player laugh and enjoy every minute.
Q: What are your future plans for the game?
We want to release the game this year for MAC, PC & Linux.
Hearing it directly from the developer, their aim is to bring you, the player, joy and fun. And I really believe that this game can bring you tons of fun with its simplistic yet interesting gameplay and the art style is just pure joy to look at. So, if you agree with me, go ahead and wish list them on Steam so that you will know exactly when the game comes out!
