Race The Sun VR Review: High Speeds and Simple Design

A simple racing game to get your adrenaline pumping. High speeds, a simple design and cool music makes this a fun and addicting experience in VR. Race The Sun is a game that was released back in 2013 and recently got a update that allows you to experience it in VR. It is developed and published by Flippfly LLC. Since its release the game has received very positive reviews and praise for its simplicity and tight controls.

The gameplay consists of flying around in a little spaceship dodging obstacles and collecting points. Smashing head on into anything instantly kills you but you can take a few hits from the side before you explode. But smashing into things isn’t the only way to die. You can also go into the shadows which slows you down and if you stop, you die. You can speed up and jump by using power ups that you pick up along the way.

The world is littered with obstacles and it changes every day. You can also go through portals that lead you to other peoples worlds. The speed feels real and exciting and can really get your adrenaline pumping once you get into it. There are also attachments for your ship which give you a slight advantage in a specific area.

Art style

The game goes for a very simple art style, working with the idea that rough shapes are all you need. This allows the player to concentrate on dodging the obstacles and not get distracted by any unnecessary details. Despite the simple art style the game looks nice and clean.

The soundtrack is definitely something worth mentioning. It is filled with pleasant melodies that are easy to zone out when you are concentrating on not dying but are also great songs on their own. That is if you pay them any attention.

The Verdict

The game does one thing but it does it really well. And at this price it is doing enough. Its addicting “One more try.” type of gameplay is something that will keep you coming back and not wanting to leave. It runs on Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.
