Do you ever feel like you just have to move? The need to move your feet, shake your hips and wave your hands, no matter how silly it looks. You could just pretend that your bedroom is a dance floor and you are Tony Manero from Saturday Night Fever. But if you have a VR headset for PC, you don’t have to pretend. Start up Wave Circles from Steam and let the rhythm run through you.
Rhythm Games in VR
Ever since the golden days of DDR, people have been playing around with different forms of rhythm games. DDR had the dance pad, Guitar Hero and Rock Band had the instruments, osu! had the drawing tablet, StepMania had the keyboard and Audiosurf had the mouse. And there are so many more that I don’t have the time to list them all out. But ever since Beat Saber came out, people saw that VR had such amazing potential for making amazing Rhythm games. Incomes Wave Circles. A simple name for a game that can be as complicated as dance itself.
So how do you play?
Well, you dance. Duh… Okay, it’s not as simple as that. Each of your hands corresponds to a color. One is red and the other is blue. Colored balls and circles fly at you with the rhythm of the music and you have to move your hands to the objects and follow their path. The circles are usually in a trail that you have to trace with your hands. Remember to not only play with your hands but to move your entire body as well. You don’t dance with just your hands, do you? Well unless you are doing the robot.
A good workout
Active dancing has always been a good workout and it’s no different in Wave Circles. Once you get in the rhythm of the game, you won’t even notice where the time goes and when you managed to get so sweaty and pumped up.
The game starts you off with seventeen groovy tracks with three difficulty settings each. Once you master all the normal songs you can create your own beatmaps for any song you want. Feel like showing off your dance moves for Big in Japan? No problem. Want to record a fast paced dance to your favorite wild techno track? You got it. Want to try and dance to Johnny Cash’s cover of Hurt? Ummmm, okay. Give that a try. My beatmap for that would be just reaching for the tissues and wiping my tears.
Wave Circle is an amazing VR game with infinite replayability because of its creative features. It’s easy to pick up and play, and it’s appropriate for most people. Songs have difficulty settings, so that even if you are a bad dancer, like me, you will be able to do alright. Now, in the words of the great David Bowie, “Let’s Dance”.
